Our History

Since 2008, the Innovation Center for U.S. Dairy has played a defining role in shaping how the industry comes together. Its history reflects a founding vision that has evolved with the times while remaining grounded in shared purpose.

Power of Industry Collaboration

Founded by U.S. dairy farmers through Dairy Management Inc., the Innovation Center for U.S. Dairy was built on a bold idea: that even in a competitive marketplace, the entire industry is stronger when it works together. What began with 34 visionary leaders has grown into a pre-competitive forum engaging more than 500 companies from across the U.S. dairy industry. Together, this diverse community – farmers, cooperatives, processors, brands and allied industry – aligns on shared priorities and drives collective progress for people, animals, and the planet.

A Legacy of Leadership and Progress

Since its inception in 2008, the Innovation Center has served as a catalyst for progress across the dairy value chain. At its inaugural meeting, a diverse group of stakeholders -- including farmers, processors, retails, and academics -- came together with a shared commitment to work precompetitively on issues of mutual importance. That founding spirit continues to shape the Innovation Center’s work today. Rooted in farmer leadership and shaped by the voices and perspectives of industry leaders, the Innovation Center builds alignment, sets shared priorities, and develops solutions that benefit the entire U.S. dairy community.

Milestones have included the establishment of the U.S. dairy industry’s 2050 environmental stewardship goals, the industry’s inaugural sustainability report, and a range of collaborative initiatives advancing animal care, food safety, health and wellness research, and global innovation.

Equally important, this work reshaped how the industry comes together, through shared tools, common metrics, and multi-stakeholder forums such as the Dairy Sustainability Alliance®, creating new pathways for alignment and collective progress.

Precompetitive efforts like these have long served as a springboard for on-farm and company-level outcomes, enabling participants to translate shared priorities into meaningful, real-world action.

Adapting to a Changing World

As the food system continues to evolve, so too has the Innovation Center’s focus, reflecting both the values of the dairy community and the realities of a rapidly shifting world. Building on its strong foundation in environmental stewardship and animal care, the industry has expanded its commitments to include other aspects of sustainability including nutrition security, community vitality, and workforce well-being.

Industry-wide initiatives such as the U.S. Dairy Stewardship Commitment, Processor Stewardship Reporting Tool, FARM Animal Care and Environmental Stewardship, the 2050 Environmental Stewardship Goals, Sustainable Food Systems Curriculum and the first industry-level materiality assessment are just a few examples of how we've aligned the sector with leading sustainability frameworks.

Through this broader lens, the Innovation Center has helped align priorities, elevate shared strategies, and support continued leadership in transparency, resilience, and social responsibility.

Driving Collective Impact

Throughout its history, the Innovation Center has evolved alongside the industry – scaling solutions, activating leadership, and strengthening reporting across the value chain. By enabling U.S. dairy to speak with a unified voice and lead with purpose in an evolving global food system, it has helped build long-term business viability and sustained trust in dairy.

One belief has always defined the Innovation Center, and will continue to shape its future: U.S. dairy’s greatest strength lies in its ability to lead together, delivering a future that is better for business, society, and the planet.
